My Approach to Photo Coaching

After more than 50 years of photographing people, places and things, and years of studying and teaching photography I thought it time to share some of my insights with other photographers of all ages and skill levels. Throughout my life, I have found photography to be an amazing tool for learning, healing, creativity and personal discovery. I look forward to helping others in their journey along this path.

I have learned that true creativity comes from experimentation and playfulness and seldom from adhering to rigid concepts of seeing and art. Photography is a unique and immediate medium. Discovering creativity with your camera can be an exciting adventure. I’ve done my most creative photography when I was willing to take chances to produce something new and exciting, not knowing if it would be successful or not.

Clients are sometimes confused as to what to shoot, how to approach a subject, how to light a subject, and which equipment to use to capture the image they want. As your photography coach, my goal is to help educate and free you from conventional ways of seeing that are common in the media today. I will introduce you to a playful way to find new visual solutions. Through your efforts, with my specific instruction, guidance and encouragement, you will gain confidence in your own vision and ability to photograph your subject creatively. You will learn to take chances, to risk making mistakes, to discover new visual ideas and approaches, and how to use your equipment more proficiently.

I employ many teaching methods: we review photographs that you’ve taken and ones you love that you have found in magazines, websites, blogs or books. We can visit museums and galleries to learn and to be inspired by other photographers who have gone before us. Then working in actual photographic situations, we can begin to create a new approach for your eyes and mind; we’ll shoot on location, in town, at a natural scenic setting, in your home or kitchen, or wherever you want to.

Because I’m available to come to you, on your schedule, and working with your equipment and mine, you are the center of the learning. Your questions are answered. Your frustrations are alleviated. Many crave this individual attention and instruction, which is sometimes missing in a group or classroom setting. Oftentimes all you need is a couple of hours with a professional to get you over some resistance or give you the direction you need.
