About Infant Massage Classes

Infant massage classes usually take place at Forest View Studio in Austerlitz, New York, and consist of a series of four consecutive 2 hour classes, one per week, attended by four to six babies and one or both parents. Included in the fee of $100 for the series is a copy of Vimala Schneider McClure’s “Infant Massage: A Handbook for Loving Parents.” (the bible for infant massage ), small bottle of grapeseed oil to get you started, and handouts each week outlining techniques and facts related to infant massage. Besides learning massage techniques to give a full body massage to your baby, you will be given stretches to perform with your baby. I will be demonstrating all massage strokes and techniques on a doll, and you will be the only person actually massaging your baby.

Covered in this course: The history and origins of infant massage, benefits of infant massage to your baby and to yourself, elements of bonding between parent and child, when to do massage and contraindications for infant massage, behavioral states of the newborn child, how to relax your baby if he tenses up during a massage, baby cues-time out signals, reflexes of the new born, foods that may cause gas and colic through mother's milk, massaging the older child, relaxing music including lullabyes, and ways to relieve parental stress. The class is also a great way to meet other parents enjoying the joys and challenges of life with a newborn. Many participants become friends and part of the other family’s support system.
